Dental Health Resolutions for 2016

It’s a new year! Now couldn’t be a better time to get serious about your dental health. The best way to care for your dental health is by diligently brushing and flossing your teeth, but often times we can fall off track. Let’s make a pact together to take better care of your teeth this year with these 5 resolutions:

1. Floss EVERY Day

This one is so important! Some people tend to think that flossing is not a big deal and that it doesn’t need to be done every day if at all. Other people just simply forget to floss after they brush or unless there is something actually stuck between their teeth that they can feel. Regardless of whether or not you think you need to floss your teeth, you should always do it at least once a day, every day.

2. Brush 2-3 times EVERY Day

You wouldn’t believe how many Americans only brush their teeth ONCE a day! It’s so important to, at the very least, brush your teeth once in the morning and once in the evening. If you can brush after meals and before bed, that is best. It is often helpful to keep a small toothbrush and tube of toothpaste with you at all times or in your desk at work for those midday brushings.

3. Visit the Dentist Regularly

Most dentists recommend regular checkups and teeth cleanings every 6 months. This way we can keep track of your dental health and make sure you can address a larger problem quickly should one arise.

4. Eat Less Sugar

This one is not only beneficial to your overall health, but it’s especially beneficial for your teeth. Sucking on sugary hard candies or overindulging on sugary treats can really take a toll on your teeth’s enamel. The best way to protect the enamel on your teeth is by cutting down on sugar and making sure to drink lots of water after consuming sugary foods. Sugar means cavities!

5. Chew Sugarless Gum During the Day

A great way to keep your teeth free of plaque during the day, as opposed to regular midday brushing, is by chewing sugar-free gum. This pulls excess food from your teeth and freshens breath. Make sure to buy sugar-free gum, as sugary gums are just as bad as sugary candies.
