4 Common Dental Problems Fixed by Veneers

How Do Dental Veneers Work?

Dental veneers are thin shells made from either porcelain or resin that are custom crafted to fit over your teeth. You and your dentist would discuss what you want for your teeth, and he or she will perform a check-up to ensure your teeth are healthy. Then, you’ll have three appointments:

  • Preparation – Your dentist buffs your teeth, removing only a half a millimeter (about half of the thickness of a dime) of enamel to make room for veneers. Then, they will take a mold of your teeth and send it to the lab for fabrication.
  • Application – Within about one to two weeks, your veneers will come in, and you’ll come in to have them applied. Your dentist will test them for fit and shape, making small adjustments as needed, before permanently bonding them to your teeth using a special cement.
  • Follow-up – After a few weeks, you’ll come back in to make sure they are fitting well and comfortable for you.

Common Dental Problems Fixed By Veneers

The four main cosmetic concerns that we use dental veneers to fix include:

Intrinsic Tooth Staining

While professional teeth whitening is a great way to lighten extrinsic stains – stains on the outer enamel caused by coffee, colas, or red wine – intrinsic stains are harder to remove. These are discolorations below the enamel and within the tooth, often caused by age, trauma to the tooth, or medication reactions. Veneers are an excellent way to cover these discolorations.

Chipped Teeth

When a tooth is chipped, you feel like that’s all anyone will notice when you smile or talk. Veneers are often a great solution because you can have one shell placed over the damaged tooth or you can get several of your visible teeth done in order to have a symmetrical smile.

Misshapen or Worn Teeth

If your teeth are undersized, misshapen, or have worn down due to chronic teeth grinding, topping them with veneers will provide you with a natural-looking row of even, properly shaped teeth. This will also protect your teeth from additional wear, especially when paired with a mouth guard to reduce grinding.

Gaps and Misaligned Teeth

Teeth that have gaps are at greater risk for cavities and decay because the gum may not have as strong of a hold on the tooth and food and bacteria is more easily trapped in these spaces. Veneers are often used to close the gaps or reduce crookedness which, assuming standard dental care is taken, can help minimize cavities, decay, and other problems.
